As a research engineer at Sandia National Laboratories and NASA Ames Research Center, Ochoa investigated optical systems for performing information processing. The California native earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from San Diego State University, along with master’s and doctorate degrees in electrical engineering from Stanford University. Ellen Ochoa was assigned the position of “specialist”. The spacecraft circled Earth every 90 minutes at a height of between 291 and 299 km. The astronaut was compensated for her efforts by living in a microgravity environment that made her feel three times lighter than on Earth. Dr Ellen Ochoa, a Mexican-American scientist with a PhD in electrical engineering, was the first Latina in space.
